Planning for Your Degree

After you are admitted to the construction management major (see Admission and Registration for more information on admission requirements and the admission process) your academic adviser will assist you in planning your course of study. Keep the following key points in mind as you plan for your degree:

Duration

The duration of the course of study is different for each student, depending on transferable credits and number of courses a student is able to take each semester.

Credit Load

Courses are usually two to four credits; the average part-time student enrolls in two to three courses per term.

Location and Scheduling

Courses are offered on the U of M Minneapolis campus at convenient late afternoon and evening times.

  • Required Applied Business courses may be taken online.
  • Before registering, check the University of Minnesota's One Stop for up-to-date course information including times, days, and locations.

Sequencing and Prerequisites

Many of the courses in the Construction Management Curriculum have prerequisites and run in sequence. Therefore, care is needed when designing your course plan. To assist you, the advising staff has compiled a Construction Management Tentative Course Schedule. Consult the Planning Guide for examples of five-year, four-year, and expedited degree plans.

Industry Internships

You'll also have an opportunity to apply and integrate your knowledge by participating in a construction industry internship. A faculty member and industry mentor will guide your progress. For details, see the Internship Information Guide. The Internship Policy Statement provides further information on the important role of the internship in the construction management curriculum.
