Accreditation

Institutional accreditation already exists for the Construction Management program; the four University of Minnesota campuses are accredited at that level by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Specialized accreditation of the CMgt baccalaureate program by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE ) is being actively pursued, and most of the criteria are now in place.

Writing-Enriched Curriculum

Construction Management was selected to be part of the final 2011 cohort of the U of M Writing-Enriched Curriculum (WEC) pilot project. Peter Hilger will lead the work by program faculty to articulate professional writing outcomes for graduates, and to strategically integrate writing across CMgt courses. This work complements the program’s efforts toward accreditation by the ACCE.

Construction Management LinkedIn Site

A LinkedIn site for the Construction Management program and all interested stakeholders has been created. Students are cordially invited to join and participate. LinkedIn is a great way to become familiar with the construction industry: you can network with professionals, be part of discussions, receive news postings on current topics and issues, and get job announcements.

Construction Management Student Association

The Construction Management student group, now called the Construction Management Student Association, has been re-formed. All signs indicate that CMSA will be very active and useful, with construction community affiliations. Membership is open to any U of M student, regardless of college, who has an interest in construction management.

  • A Facebook page has been built for the student group; its main purpose is recruitment and informal communication. The Facebook group and page are “closed,” meaning that members must be approved by the group’s administrator, and only members can see all content. Please feel free to request membership if you are interested in joining the group.
  • Student group leaders will be making regular postings on the main Construction Management LinkedIn site.

Publications

Construction Management faculty and students are distinguishing themselves with scholarly research and writing. More publications are expected to appear in the future.

  1. A research paper has come out of a fall 2008 CMgt Topics class centered on the practice of Best Value Procurement (BVP). BVP first came to widespread public attention on the heels of the I-35W Bridge collapse. The paper, Best Value Procurement: Lessons Learned, looks at Bridge-related BVP issues and evaluates the current state of the practice in the public sector.
  2. Construction Management instructor A. Peter Hilger has written a paper, Shop Drawings and Related Submittals: An Essential Construction Tool, that is anticipated to be widely useful.
