Application and Registration
Applying to the Intensive English Program
To be accepted into the program:
- Show proof of high school graduation
- Have at least two years of high school-level English
- Verify funding to cover expenses while you are studying in the United States
- Fill out a full-time application form for admission and send it to the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) with:
- A copy of your high school diploma or college transcript
- Your signature to verify your source of funding
Overseas Students
- The application deadline for each term is seven (7) weeks prior to the start of classes.
- You are advised to send all application documents at least two (2) months prior to the beginning of the term you intend to enroll in.
Note: Please keep in mind that it may be extremely difficult to secure a visa in a short timeframe.
Visa Process
- Once your application is complete, we will send you an I-20 form and letter of admission.
- Pay the SEVIS fee and make an appointment for an F-1 visa interview.
- Take the I-20 form, letter of admission, and proof of funding to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
- When making your plans, please allow plenty of extra time for the visa process. Due to increased security, the visa process can take one or more months to complete.
- Once you arrive in the U.S., you will:
- Take a test to determine your level of English proficiency
- Attend a new student orientation session
Application for Part-Time Study
You can apply to the Minnesota Intensive English Program on a part-time basis. To be considered as a part-time student:
- Take three or fewer courses per term
- Fill out the part-time application form
- Send it to the Minnesota English Language Program with:
- A copy of your high school diploma or college transcript
- Your signature to verify funding

Summer 2012: June 25-August 10, 2012

Fall 2012: September 4-December 14, 2012
- Application Deadline: Friday, July 20, 2012

Minnesota Intensive English Program Costs
Full-time students must be enrolled in either three to five courses, depending upon level.

*Based on full-time enrollment in Intensive English Program classes. Students at the higher levels who elect to take additional courses will pay additional tuition for those courses.
**Medical insurance through the University of Minnesota is available for Intensive English Program participants on F and J visas only. Insurance cost listed is for student coverage only and does not include coverage for spouse or dependents. Medical insurance and living expenses figures are estimates based upon 2010-11 information and may vary as much as 10%.
Part-Time Intensive English Program Costs
Part-time students can enroll in three or fewer courses.

*Courses (Reading and Composition; Oral Skills) that meet 10 hours per week cost $2,190.00 in the fall and spring and $1,570.00 in the summer. TOEFL Preparation is a short course that costs $590.00. All figures are estimates and may vary as much as 10%.
Housing
Most students arrange their own housing off campus. There are many off-campus housing options. For a list of off-campus housing options, please visit the Housing Web site.
If you would like to live on-campus in a dormitory, you MUST submit an application and a $25 check/money order with your MELP application by the deadline.
The deadlines for on-campus housing are:
- Summer and Fall semesters: May 1
- Spring semester: November 1
