Interpreting - Undergraduate level

In our seemingly shrinking world and melting-pot communities, building bridges between cultures and fostering accurate communication between speakers of different languages has never been more important. By completing the Certificate in Interpreting, you will be able to assist others, as a professional interpreter, in oral communication between different languages.

The Certificate curriculum includes general courses in community interpreting and translation. It also features two specializations:

  • Health Care Interpreting
  • Legal Interpreting

As a Certificate student you will develop knowledge and skills in such areas as interpreter protocols, ethical issues, specialized terminologies, consecutive interpreting, sight translation, and simultaneous interpreting. You will also take a course in translation and an elective course in a related discipline such as linguistics.

The instructors of this program are subject-matter specialists and interpreters who are recognized leaders in their profession. Many have years of experience as trainers, along with accomplishments in related research and publication. Teaching materials developed in this program are used in other training programs around the United States. The program is offered through Degree and Credit Programs in the College of Continuing Education. At the University of Minnesota, Rochester campus, the curriculum is sponsored by the Department of Health Sciences and Continuing Education.

With this expertise behind it, this program provides an exceptional learning opportunity that enables you to earn valued credentials from the University of Minnesota. Courses are available on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota and in classrooms at the University Center in Rochester. And, with most courses offered in the late afternoon or evenings, it's easy to fit them into your busy schedule.

We are currently admitting students fluent in Spanish. Other languages such as Hmong, Oromo, Russian, and Somali are accepted as long as there is sufficient demand.
