MLS Writing Workshops
Below is the Fall 2008 schedule for workshops offered by Ellen Lucast, the MLS writing tutor. These workshops are free for admitted MLS students. Workshop time will be devoted to the topic and to group discussion of anyone’s project; please e-mail your writing to Ellen in advance: lucas034@umn.edu
Refresher: Writing the Academic Paper
Saturday, September 20, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Agenda includes: Discussion of the basics of writing an academic paper, defining a thesis, and structuring an argument. The beginning of the semester is a fine time for a refresher!

Interdisciplinary Writing
Saturday, October 25, 9:30 - 12:00 noon
Agenda includes: Defining interdisciplinary work, understanding the "whys" and "how tos" of interdisciplinary work; learning its components and research design; and learning about interdisciplinary writing.

Citation and Sources / Finding Your Critical Voice
Saturday, November 22, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Citation and Sources agenda includes: Examining why we document, learning to avoid “accidentally” plagiarizing, reviewing different documentation styles (how and when to use them), web or online source documentation, and using primary and secondary sources.
Finding Your Critical Voice agenda includes: defining critical voice; exploring your voice in different writing genres; applying objective vs. subjective voice in challenges and debates; developing your critical voice in various components of your academic research; and learning strategies for developing your critical voice.
All workshops will be held in Nolte Center Lounge on the Minneapolis East Bank campus. The address 315 Pillsbury Drive SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455

Spring 2009 Final Project Materials Due
If you want to take the Final Project seminar in Spring 2009, plan ahead! To get a permission number to register you must submit the following to the MLS office by December 5, 2008:
1. The working title of your project
2. A detailed outline with a paragraph describing each major section
3. A complete bibliography with annotations for your main sources
Additionally, all incompletes must be done and grades must be entered for all course work prior to registering for the Final Project seminar.

2009 Registration Dates
Spring Semester 2009 registration begins November 11 for admitted students and December 5 for non-admitted students. Classes begin January 20.

Admission Deadline
There are two admission cycles each year. The next deadline is March 1, 2009, for admission Summer or Fall 2009. The following deadline is September 1, 2009, for admission Spring 2010. See Admissions for guidelines.
MLS Student Association Meeting
The next Student Association meeting will be October 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Sally's Restaurant in Stadium Village.
