Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who are the certificate courses geared toward?
The certificate program courses are designed for current professionals working in private colleges, as well as those interested in this sector of higher education.

Do I have to be enrolled in a degree program?
Students can be enrolled in a current degree program, but this is not a requirement. We welcome and encourage nondegree-seeking students who want a deeper understanding of private colleges and preparation for leadership roles.

Why do I need a Private College Leadership Certificate?
The certificate program courses will prepare you to lead more effectively at a private college. Private colleges face unique leadership challenges that are often left unaddressed in higher education preparatory programs that focus largely on public four-year institutions. Additionally, our cohort model will allow you to connect with others interested in the same sector.

Will my credits transfer to my current degree program?
You will receive three graduate credits from the University of Minnesota for each certificate course successfully completed. Many programs will accept transfer credits from the University of Minnesota. Ask your degree program’s academic adviser about their transfer credit policies.

Are the courses offered online?
Yes. The PCL certificate program classes are offered in a fully online format. Future cohorts may be offered in alternative formats, including a hybrid mix of online and traditional classroom delivery models, weekend formats, etc.

How long does it take to complete the certificate?
Typically the certificate can be completed in one year. The courses are offered sequentially and most students will take the four-course sequence as a cohort model. Each course lasts eight weeks.

Who are the certificate program faculty?
The certificate courses are taught by senior leaders from colleges and universities around the country.
