Split Rock Summer Workshops

Daily Schedule | Selecting a Workshop

The 2008 program features more than 40 workshops and retreats that serve artists of all interests, backgrounds, and skill levels, not to mention a variety of approaches to art forms, media, and methods. The faculty are renowned practicing artists and writers, and all workshops allow for significant one-to-one contact between participant and instructor.

Away from the demands of daily life, participants revel in having the time and space to explore art in unique artmaking environments that foster hands-on learning and supportive artists’ communities.

The Twin Cities
An easy nonstop flight from almost anywhere in the United States, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul offer the best of two worlds: the electric energy of a culturally vibrant metropolitan area, and the tranquility of beautiful parks and natural areas that showcase the Mississippi River and legendary chain of lakes for which the Cities are known. And with a geographic closeness that its name implies, moving between cities is as simple as crossing the street. Be it by car or taxi, bus, bike, or blades, getting around town is easy!

Consistently ranked as one of the most livable urban areas in the country, the Twin Cities offers unparalleled arts and cultural attractions, including the renowned Guthrie Theatre, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the University's Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, among hundreds of other visual art, design, literary, and performing art venues.

Minneapolis and St. Paul have a burgeoning restaurant scene, from gourmet dining and al fresco cafes to an amazing array of ethnic eateries, sure to satisfy all palettes and price ranges. Have a yen to shop? The Cities are a shopper's heaven complete with large malls to specialized shops that supply all that is direly needed or dearly wanted. And of course, many people feel that their visit isn't complete without a trip to the Mall of America, located about twenty minutes from campus.

The Cloquet Forestry Center
Often referred to as the University's hidden treasure, the Cloquet Forestry Center is a nationally recognized research and teaching center tucked in the forests southwest of Duluth. With 18 miles of hiking trails, parts of which pass through a spectacular 44-acre stand of centuries-old virgin red and white pine, the Center couples the peaceful seclusion of the forest with the convenience of a retreat facility. The rugged land formations of nearby Jay Cooke State Park, the many species of wildlife (173 species of birds alone), and the sometimes raging, sometimes gentle St. Louis River, all help to make for a genuine northern Minnesota retreat experience.
