2017 Structural Engineering Seminar Series Brochure

Use the online registration when registering yourself and paying with a credit card. After registering online you will receive "Registration Confirmation" and "Receipt" e-mails from (you may want to check your Spam folder if you don't see these in your inbox).


Use the paper registration form for registering multiple attendees or if you need to have the registration fee billed to your organization.

The fee for each individual seminar is $90 or a discounted fee of $450 for the entire series (the six-session discount is for one individual participant, not multiple participants). Fees include tuition, instructional materials, and refreshments. We encourage you to register for the entire series and receive the discounted fee.

Refunds, minus a $30 processing fee, will be issued if cancellation is received in writing at least five business days before the date of the seminar. Refunds will not be issued to participants who have signed up for the entire series but miss individual seminars. The University of Minnesota reserves the right to cancel seminars if necessary, in which case a full refund will be made.

About the Seminar Series

This Structural Engineering Seminar Series is designed for practicing engineers and architects. Each program addresses specific structural issues and concerns involved in the design and construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures, and incorporates examples of various principles involved.

The purpose of the Seminar Series is to:

  • provide current information on topics of interest to the structural engineering community
  • increase professionalism in structural engineering
  • provide a forum for continuing education in the engineering community

Who Should Attend

This series is planned for design and construction engineers; practicing architects; project managers; city, county, and state building officials; and others interested in structural engineering design and construction.

Series Day/Location/Time

Sessions will be held on Tuesdays at the Earle Brown Heritage Center, 6155 Earle Brown Drive, Brooklyn Center, MN (directions). Earle Brown Heritage Center has free on-site parking, complimentary wireless Internet, and easy freeway access from I-94/694 or Highway 100.

All seminars will be from 1:00−4:15 p.m.; sessions include a 15-minute break. 

Continuing Education Units

Each seminar session awards 0.3 CEUs. The entire seminar series awards 1.8 CEUs. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours in an organized continuing education activity under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction.

US Bank Stadium: Structural Engineering and Advanced Parametric Modeling Solutions

The $975M, 1.7-million square foot, 65,000-seat Minnesota Multi-Purpose Stadium is designed to be the home of NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in addition to hosting a variety of events, including MLS soccer, NCAA basketball and baseball, high school sports, motocross races, concerts and conventions.

Thornton Tomasetti’s structural engineering, building skin, and kinetic mechanization design teams collaborated with Dallas-based architect HKS to design an innovative building that features a series of operable doors that pivot to provide natural ventilation and access to the west plaza. The speakers will discuss the creative structural engineering seating bowl and roof framing design as well as advanced parametric modeling solutions that were utilized to achieve the inventive solutions. Five operable glass doors on the west façade of the stadium provide unparalleled views and game-day experience. A single monumental steel ridge truss spanning 990 feet along the length of the field provides the primary support for the roof structure.The south roof is clad with 240,000 square feet of transparent ETFE material, making it the largest ETFE roof in the United States.

This presentation closely follows the new Fourth Edition of the Steel Deck Institute’s Diaphragm Design Manual (DDM04), which was first published in 2015 and complies with the requirements of AISI S310-13. Discussion will focus on diaphragm and fastener interaction over cold-form framing, as well as the upcoming SDI cold-form manual currently in development. A demonstration of a high-strength crimped side lap connection will be included in the presentation. Selected roof and floor deck topics such as scissor lifts on elevated slabs, tips for easy constructability, and other frequently asked questions will be addressed in the seminar.

It will provide an overview of the approach taken and required by government agencies, including the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, and Department of Veteran Affairs. The case studies will include examples of steel, concrete, and wood structures and include the topic of existing structure retrofits.

CMGC—Using All Three Legs of the Stool to Relocate US 53 over the Rouchleau Iron Mine in Virginia, Minnesota

Highway 53 (US 53) crosses northern Minnesota, serving as the principal north-south route through the heart of the Mesabi Iron Range to the Lake Superior ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. In the city of Virginia, MN, the highway bisects two open-pit iron mines and required relocation by the fall of 2017 due to mining operations. To accelerate the project delivery, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) selected the Construction Manager General Contractor (CMGC) delivery method where the General Contractor participates in the design development and allows the construction to start while the design is being completed. This process of a fully integrated Owner-Designer-Contractor team allowed MnDOT to successfully deliver the project on schedule including the new 1,130-foot-long steel plate girder bridge spanning the Rouchleau iron mine over 200 feet above the floor of the open-pit mine.

Practical Lateral Load Design and Detailing of Wood Shear Walls

This session will focus on aspects of design of wood shear walls, including 2012 and 2015 code requirements, detailing for both sawn and engineered lumber, use of effective diaphragm schedules, and a comparison of the three design methods. This seminar will also include detailing of openings and calculation of deflections. It will conclude with a discussion of case studies of construction deficiencies involving nails, anchor bolts, straps, and incomplete load paths.
