Susan McClernon

Dr. Susan (Sue) McClernon became the Health Services Management faculty director in 2012. She brings extensive experience in health care operations, patient safety, information systems, and medical staff relations. Sue is the president/CEO of Innovative Healthcare Leadership, LLC, a health care consulting firm. She has served in hospital administration for over 30 years. Previous appointments were COO of Essentia St. Mary's Medical Center, Dultuh, MN; COO/administrator of Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, TX; and vice president at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, FL. Sue has presented internationally on bioethics, and authored a chapter on strategic business planning in the textbook Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles, and Practice, 3rd ed.

Charles Bethel

Charles “Chuck” Bethel is an attorney who has worked for the last 20 years assisting businesses and government entities with contract and litigation issues. He has practiced transactional law (contract drafting) and litigation, as well as dispute resolution for a range of business, government, and individual clients. He has owned or managed a variety of businesses, including commercial laundries, restaurants, and nightclubs. Chuck has taught legal research and writing at Hamline University and courses at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton and Oshkosh, WI.

Lori Bonderson

MA, counseling, University of Wyoming; BS, education, University of South Dakota

Lori Bonderson’s areas of expertise include interpersonal communication, leadership development, and management of nonprofit organizations. She has more than 15 years' experience teaching and consulting in career skills at the University of Minnesota, at community colleges, and in adult education. She also counsels and coaches individuals in the private sector. Lori has been awarded (and has managed and administered) more than $1.5 million in private grant funds and donations since 2007. She is currently the director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of South Dakota, a nonprofit educational program for older adults.

Tania Daniels

Tania Daniels is passionate about engaging all members of the health care team in continual improvement of the health care system. She started as a candy striper in a physical therapy department, then became a physical therapist aide, and finally served as a professional physical therapist. After seeing many aspects of health care in these roles, she was ready to pursue a career in quality improvement. She was hired by the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA), where she currently serves as Vice President for Quality and Patient Safety. The program she leads has been recognized with multiple national awards for quality, leadership, and patient safety.

Karen Morgan Erickson

Karen Morgan Erickson, FACHE, has more than 25 years of experience in health care strategy and execution, product marketing, sales operations, and account and program management. Much of her career has been at Medtronic, where she currently leads strategic marketing initiatives. Karen has twice received the Medtronic Marketing Excellence Award, as well as the CEO Inclusion Award. Before Medtronic, she spent 12 years consulting on strategy development for health systems, physicians, and pharmaceutical organizations. Karen is board certified in health care management and is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Monica Hamling began her career as a technical recruiter with a contract staffing firm in 1995. After that, she worked for a variety of organizations doing IT recruiting for the software, consulting, healthcare, and medical device industries. In 2002, Monica joined Medtronic to lead their technical recruiting team, and continued there for nine years in a variety of human resources roles. In 2011 she joined UnitedHealth Group and is currently their Director of Talent Acquisition. She has taught courses on technology recruiting and corporate leadership, and is happy to assist her students as they learn to represent their personal brand throughout their transition into careers.

David Kaiser's academic interests and consulting practices coincide in the areas of leadership, ethics, and organizational behavior. He has developed and taught numerous university courses about management. David has held both line and staff management positions in industry; consulted and conducted seminars with companies throughout the U.S. and Europe; and received three Professor of the Year awards. David's educational philosophy is grounded in mindful inquiry and critical reflection rather than reaction and judgment. Whether in the classroom or in the boardroom, he strives to provoke interdisciplinary ways of thinking about organizational issues and opportunities.

Geoff Kaufmann

Geoff Kaufmann, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, is the vice president for patient services of the Biomedical Division of the American Red Cross. He is the former director of planning and marketing for the University of Minnesota Hospital, and is the Minnesota Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives. A nationally recognized authority in health marketing, Geoff has over 30 years of experience in business development, strategic planning, marketing, new product development, and operations. His focuses have included creating physician-clinic-hospital networks, improving clinical and service outcomes, operating senior health care services, developing a wound care business, and creating diagnostic imaging centers.

William Kenney Photo

William Kenney

M.H.A., University of Minnesota; B.A., business administration and social work, St. John’s University

William O. (Bill) Kenney is Chief Executive Officer of Dermatology Consultants. Previously, he served as President of the Phillips Eye Institute for Allina Health and later as the VP of operations for the United Hospital Cardiovascular Service Line. He has served as a clinical social worker at United Hospital, focusing on oncology, psychiatry, endocrinology, and geriatrics. Later he served at HealthEast and Park Nicollet Health Services, Northwestern University and Medical Faculty Foundation, and Presbyterian Hospital. Bill has expertise in clinic, hospital, and long-term operations, and his experience in health care leadership includes administrative responsibility in cardiovascular services, ophthalmology, senior services, dermatology, and primary care operations.

Lynn Kiehne

Dr. Lynn Kiehne is a health care consultant. Her clients include those working on special projects seeking nonprofit federal funding, as well as CEOs and boards of directors in strategic change management. Currently she consults with HealthSouth as they pursue a Certificate of Need in the Tampa Bay marketplace. She teaches at University of South Florida in their School of Public Health, working with master’s candidates in health care administration, and master’s and doctoral candidates in public health. She has also served as adjunct faculty for the University of Florida School of Public Health master’s programs in health care administration and public health.

Deborah Mackay

Deborah Mackay practiced construction law for 14 years at the Minneapolis firm of Faegre & Benson, where she handled a broad range of construction industry disputes and transactions. She has represented large commercial contractors, design professionals, subcontractors, material suppliers, and project owners. Deborah taught construction law and ethics in the Infrastructure Systems Engineering program at the University of Minnesota and has presented numerous construction law continuing education seminars. She is a past chair of the Construction Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association and a past president of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), Twin Cities chapter.

Bill McDonough is the president and CEO of Constellation Group of Minneapolis and CEO of Arkansas Mutual, MMIC Insurance Company, UMIA Insurance Company, and Health IT. Bill has worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years, most of that focusing on medical professional liability insurance. He holds the Registered Professional Liability Underwriter designation. He also sits on several profit and nonprofit boards including Constellation, MMIC, PIAA, and Temple University College of Education, and is a speaker on the insurance industry at national conferences.

Donald Moschkau

Donald (Don) Moschkau is a Human Resources Strategy System Executive with Fairview Health Services, where he leads the Human Resources Strategy and Operations areas. He serves as a consultant to other executives throughout the organization on strategic initiatives and the impacts or drivers of the organization’s human capital. He has more than 20 years’ experience in human resources and specializes in strategic human resources, employee relations, employment law, diversity, recruitment, and onboarding as well as human resources regulatory compliance in the health care market. Don’s certifications include an SPHR from the Human Resources Certification Institute and an SHRM-SCP and Green Belt from the Society for Human Resources Professionals.

Mark Sharockman

Mark Sharockman is interim CFO for St. Paul Eye Clinic and St. Paul Opticians. Before that he worked with privately held medical specialty practices in the areas of orthopedics, anesthesiology, and ophthalmology. Mark dedicated the past decade to improving the financial viability of independent medical practices by implementing decision-making disciplines and defining strategic growth opportunities. He brings to his work the perspectives of several business sectors, including sports media, health services, and real estate. Mark has been involved at several organizations in value creation initiatives: acquisitions, divestitures, integrations, and implementation of transformational growth and operational improvement strategies, both as an internal manager and an outside advisor.

Erich Spencer began his career in HR in total rewards as an employee benefits specialist and was a health care reform subject matter expert before transitioning to general human resources and eventually strategic human resources. He is currently Director of Human Resources Strategy at Fairview Health Services, directly supporting two hospitals as well as two system service lines. Though he has worked in multiple industries (higher education, consumer goods, technology, contracted support services), health care is his passion. He also holds two senior-level human resources certifications, one from the Society for Human Resources (SHRM-SCP) and one from the HR Certification Institute (SPHR).

Melanie (Mel) Sullivan Photo

Melanie (Mel) Sullivan

Melanie (Mel) Sullivan started her career in health care in 1991 in a small independent orthopedic private practice. She is currently Chief Operating Officer for Twin Cities Orthopedics (TCO), one of the largest independent private practices in the country, with over 110 physicians and 39 locations in the metro area and western Wisconsin. TCO provides therapy services, MRIs, same-day surgery, prosthetics and orthotics, urgent care centers, and a variety of other musculoskeletal services. In 2010 she finished her doctorate of education in organization development from the University of St. Thomas. Her dissertation was titled Action Learning in a Single Specialty Practice: A Model for Addressing Physician Disruptive Behavior.

Susan Ziel is a health care coach and consultant with Integrity Health Strategies, drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience to assist clients in choosing their best health care options. She has served as a registered nurse, nursing administrator, university instructor, consultant, and health care attorney. Susan is an affiliate faculty member of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, and has served as an officer or board member for many health care-related organizations. She is the recipient of numerous leadership and service awards.

Jane Delehanty

Jane Delehanty has over 20 years of administrative and advising experience with the College. She is academic adviser for students pursuing the Health Services Management (HSM) bachelor's degree, certificate, and minor. She works closely with students to help them define and achieve their educational goals to prepare for careers as leaders and managers in a variety of health settings. She enjoys helping students explore their interest in improving the quality of health care delivery. Jane has a master’s degree in family education, a Minnesota teaching license in parent education, and a bachelor's degree in international relations.

Alyssa Maples

Alyssa works in the Health Services Management program as an academic adviser and internship coordinator. She has experience working in the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities as an adviser, career counselor, and instructor for the past eight years. She is passionate about helping students find resources and connections in their academic, professional, and personal lives while pursuing their undergraduate education. Alyssa has a master's degree in counseling and psychological services and an undergraduate degree in child psychology.
